Providing a brighter Christmas for Riverland families in need since 1986

Christmas, a time of giving and sharing with our loved ones and friends is usually a wonderful time of the year.

Sadly for others it can be a time of worry, disappointment and heartache or just another day to get through.

As food costs, fuel, electricity, rent and mortgages spiral, and extreme weather conditions (floods, frosts, storms, drought etc) hit the region, many Riverlanders may be facing a not-so-happy Christmas.

Give a gift of a smile this Christmas

Riverland Christmas Appeal

What we do

The Riverland Christmas Appeal aims to make Christmas a little brighter for Riverlanders in need by providing Christmas food hampers and toys for children aged 0 to 15.

Over the years, the RCA has brought Christmas cheer to many Riverland families and individuals. Each year, however, there are more eligible applications, and more hampers and toys are needed.

In 1986, the 1st Riverland Christmas Appeal provided toys and hampers for 50 families.  In 2023, the 37th Riverland Christmas Appeal provided 565 hampers and toys for 429 children, assisting a total of 1,121 Riverlanders.

In 2024, the Riverland Christmas Appeal is expecting a further increase in the number of applications for assistance and we really need your help.

How we do it

For over 38 years, the Riverland Christmas Appeal has achieved this aim with the support and generous donations from local businesses, churches, community groups and clubs and many families and individuals. Grants from all 3 of our Riverland Councils have also been greatly appreciated.

Each of the main 5 Riverland towns has a centre for applications and distribution of hampers and toys – click HERE to see where you can apply.

How you can help

We urgently require assistance with financial donations, new toys, and non-perishable food items.

Financial Donations

The majority of our food hampers are purchased from Food Bank SA, who provide an excellent assortment of festive food and treats that provide meals for several days.

95% of Christmas hampers we purchase are from cash donations.

Any cash donation would be gratefully received, and all proceeds will go directly to provide hampers and toys.

Make a once-off or regular, monthly tax-deductible donation online, or post a cheque along with your contact details to Riverland Christmas Appeal, PO Box 2192, BERRI  SA 5343

Secret Santa

In 2024, supporters can become a SECRET SANTA by specifically purchasing a hamper for a family in need.

These hampers will carry a special sticker that acknowledges that it was provided by a Secret Santa. The recipient will not know your name, but, they will know you care!

Non Perishable Food for extra hampers

Last year, approximately 30 hampers were made up through a combination of food and cash donations. Donations of non perishable food can be dropped off at the centres listed HERE

New Toys

Donations of new toys, games, books etc for children and teenagers from 0 -15 years can also be made. These can be taken to our Donation Centres, or if you prefer to donate cash for toys, please donate using the links below on our Christmas Tree.

Mallee Ulysses Toy & Tucker Run

For over 20 years the Mallee Branch of the Ulysses Club hold a Toy and Tucker Run in the Riverland, collecting donations of new toys, food items and cash for the Riverland Christmas Appeal. In 2023, over 200 bikers participated in the run, raising $4495 and collecting hundreds of toys and food items, as they rode through the Riverland towns.

The 22nd Riverland Toy and Tucker Run will be held on Sunday, 1st December 2024 – Find out more HERE
